I am Ivars Lielpēteris, and my dog school ObiDog offers modern dog training in Riga, at Šmerļa iela 3. With more than 15 years of experience, I help owners understand their dogs using only positive reinforcement methods.

My specialities are puppy school (socialization), individual dog training and behaviour correction. Whether you have a puppy who has just joined the family or an adult dog with specific challenges, I offer solutions based on science and respect for the animal.

What makes my approach different? My training philosophy

I believe training should be a joy, not forced labour. In my work I use only positive reinforcement methods. That means I don't use punishment or physical force, but focus on motivating the right behaviour, creating in the dog a desire to cooperate. I regularly expand my knowledge to make sure you get modern and effective training. My goal is to help you understand why your dog acts exactly the way it does.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does one class last?

One class is on average 45-60min.

What should you bring to class?
  • You'll need two leashes. A comfortable leash roughly two metres long, and one 5 m long (not metal and not the retractable kind, the so-called flexi).
  • A toy the dog plays with, ideally one that the owner can hold on to at one end and the dog at the other.
  • Treats – ones the dog can swallow easily, e.g. sausage cut into small pieces, or meat boiled without spices.
    Dry dog food, dog biscuits and special dog-training treats won't work. If your dog has allergies, check with your vet about which treats to choose. You can read why ‘here.
  • A treat pouch – a belt bag, needed so the treats are easy to use at the right moment. If you put the treats in a bag and keep the whole bag in your pocket, rewarding the dog in time for the right action is absolutely impossible.
  • Comfortable clothes for the owner.
Can a child come to dog school classes and train the dog?

I stick to the principle that training a dog is an adult's responsibility. A dog needs a mentally mature leader who can provide calm consistency and a sense of security.

My experience shows that the training process is far more effective when the owner does the work during the class. A dog picks up on the family's inner dynamics, and a child often lacks the authority for the dog to trust them in difficult or stressful situations.

That doesn't mean children are left out, though. I encourage you to pass on the knowledge and positive methods you've learned to everyone in the family at home. It's important that the whole family speaks the same language with the dog, but the main "foundation" and bond in the classes is built by the adult.

At what age can a puppy start attending dog school?

I recommend starting puppy school and the socialization process after the first vaccination quarantines end (usually from 3-4 months of age). The sooner a puppy learns to communicate with the world properly, the fewer problems there will be in the future.

Does dog school help if my dog pulls on the leash or barks at other dogs?

Yes, my specialty is precisely behaviour correction. We work on getting your dog to move calmly on the leash and not fall into hysterics when it sees other dogs. My goal is to make sure that walks are no longer stressful for you.

What training methods are used?

I work only with positive reinforcement methods. I don't use punishments, choke collars or electric shock collars. My approach is based on motivation and the dog's willingness to cooperate with its owner, not on fear of pain.

Where do dog school classes take place in Riga?

Individual and puppy classes take place in Riga, at Šmerļa iela 3. I also offer on-location classes in your usual walking environment in Riga and the greater Riga area, where behavioural challenges most often arise.

Can you train an adult dog too?

Definitely. The belief that you can't teach an old dog new tricks is a myth. With the right methods and patience, I help improve the behavior of a dog of any age – from a puppy all the way to a grey-muzzled senior.
